By: Roberto Garabelli

When a person walking through the bushes has a sudden close encounter with a venomous snake or some other wild animal, their normal move would be to scream and to escape from the beast as quickly as possible.

When these identical feelings of panic and horror come to surface with no sound reasons and if they occur in a perfectly secure environment (while walking on the beach or watching a movie at the local cinema) you do not have to be an expert to realize that something is wrong with your health. Experiencing a few of such episodes in a short period of time (a few weeks or months) can be a sign that the person has developed panic disorder.

At the very beginning the victims become very scared and confused. The non psychological symptoms of panic disorder that might include palpitations, nausea, shortness of breath, dizziness, excessive sweating, jelly legs etc. make the patient to ensure themselves that something totally different is going on inside their bodies. Patients usually ask for help at the wrong places. They go to a whole army of various medical specialists undergoing countless checks and tests because they are convinced that the problem is with their heart, lungs, blood pressure and so on. The mental health practitioner is usually last on their list to visit.

While experiencing the panic attack victims usually believe that they have some kind of the life threatening illness, they are going to faint on the spot, going crazy or to lose their mind. Panic attack may occur every time when the victims find themselves in a particular environment or it can just hit without a visible cause regardless of the circumstances. A big number of individuals suffering from panic disorder also develop agoraphobia (fright of wide-open or crowded surroundings from which in a case of panic attack would be difficult to escape or to seek and receive assistance.)

Panic attacks can even hit while sleeping. Hot weather also has an affect on panic disorder because victims experience more panic attacks during the warm summer months. The main reasons for this are that hot weather accelerates pulse, stimulates dizziness and dehydration. Also, during these months people are more likely to spend their time outdoors so there is a much bigger chance of running into unacquainted and dreadful situations and surroundings.

Although the real causes of panic disorder are unknown, some researches have concluded that some kinds of people are more likely to suffer of this condition than the rest of the population. This group includes people who are timid by nature and who tend is to be worried and over concerned about every single problem in their lives. They continuously analize their own abilities and are never sure if they are able to accomplish their goals and responsibilities. The signs of their instability and fears are often visible from their early years (blushing, palm sweating, palpitations, not feeling comfortable in front of older, unfamiliar people or in front of the authoritative figures.) Those kids spend a lot of time daydreaming and imagining things and possess no agonistic spirit and behavior. During their sleep they can also experience nightmares and have accidents with bed wetting. Their perception of other persons is kind of naive because they cannot observe the hidden intentions of mean people. Even after repetitive and numerous disappointments they do not change their behavior.

It is essential to remember that panic disorder is very common mental health problem in our society. Although persons that show some of the above mentioned symptoms in the early stages of their lives have a higher chance of developing panic disorder later on in their lives, not everyone will. On the contrary, some very strong individuals that are easygoing and have no obvious problems in their lives may be hit by this condition with no warnings or a reasonable explanation.
